A mill that smells like oil, not a farmhouse

Offset Bay occupies one high room over Monument. The window faces the river grid. The floor is sealed concrete. The only wood in the room is the work-order clipboard.

What you walk into

Jaws on the left. Wet mat on the right.

A granite surface plate sits under a pair of digital calipers. Irons clamp against a hosel V-block so the neck is the zero. Theo will not talk until three repeats land inside two tenths of a millimeter. That corner of the room is quiet on purpose. Conversations happen after the number exists.

Opposite the plate, a short hitting lane uses a mat we keep slightly wet from May through September. Dayton’s first-cut holds river moisture; a bone-dry range mat would lie about whether a strong-offset cavity actually skates or still knifes. In January the mat stays dry and we say so on the work order. Indoor winter is a different animal, and we refuse to pretend otherwise.

Racks along the oil-blue wall are tagged in rust paint: blade, cavity, hybrid, wedge. Drivers hang on a separate peg because their face-to-neck lag is a cousin, not the same drawing. Putters do not get a peg. We will tell you why on the putter page instead of wasting a mill slot.

Room rules

Bring the gamer. Leave the catalog in the stairwell.

  • Shoes you actually wear on NCR, Yankee Trace, or the city munis — not street soles.
  • The iron that is lying to you, even if the cavity is scuffed.
  • One sleeve-wrench stays in the car. We do not jack lofts here.
  • Sunday is dark. Saturday dies at 1:00 PM. Do not rattle the Monument door after that.

Around the mill

Parking, the river, and the 937 clock

Street spots on Monument fill at lunch. The garage a block east is kinder. We are a short walk from the river paths; that is not poetry, it is why the turf we copy stays damp. Phone the desk at (937) 555-0188 if the freight elevator is being stubborn — Suite 4 is on the raised floor and we would rather meet you than let a bag bounce the stairs.
