Cavities let the face wait — and lie to your eyes

Game-improvement irons park the leading edge well behind the hosel. That lag is extra time for a late face and a picture at address that looks shut even when the scorelines are honest.

Typical GI 5-irons in this mill land between 4 and 8 mm of lag. Long GI irons go higher. Pitching wedges in the same set often drop toward 2 mm, which is why a golfer can love the 9 and hate the 5 without changing a single motion. The progressive map exists for that kink.

On Great Miami turf, extra lag can lift how the edge presents at address, which sometimes skates a wet first-cut instead of knifing it. Sometimes it does not — a cavity with a steep leading-edge radius will still dig, offset or not. Inez wets the mat so we are not guessing from a dry rack photo.

The visual close is the trap for people who already square the face early. Beavercreek golfers come in missing left with a “forgiving” 5-iron and want more offset because a demo day said help lives there. More lag makes an early closer earlier. We would rather lose that sale than watch another ball start left of the river trees.
