Leading edge, lagging the neck

Offset Bay calipers the horizontal gap between hosel centerline and the iron’s leading edge. That lag is not a sleeve jack and it is not a bore-through. It is the face sitting behind the neck — player-small on a blade, game-help on a cavity — and Dayton’s river-valley turf punishes the wrong number.

01 · Blade

Near-zero to 2 mm of lag. The leading edge almost shares the hosel’s address. Great Miami damp turf will grab that edge if you arrive open.

02 · Cavity GI

4 to 8 mm is common. Extra wait time for a face that likes to stay open, extra visual “closed” at address that Oakwood golfers keep arguing with.

03 · Progressive

Long irons often carry more lag than the pitching wedge. We map the set as a curve, not a single stamp on the 7.

The Great Miami keeps downtown turf wetter than catalogs shot in Arizona. An iron with strong offset lifts the leading edge slightly at address for a given loft, which can skate that damp first cut instead of knifing it. A blade with almost no lag does the opposite: the edge arrives with the hosel, and river grass holds it.

We opened Suite 4 in 2015 because Dayton golfers were buying GI cavities for the look of “help,” then wondering why the 5-iron aimed left of the flag on NCR’s back side. Offset is a visual lie and a timing gift at the same time. The mill exists to separate those two stories with a caliper, not a catalog paragraph.

If you drove here thinking we twist a driver sleeve, turn around. Sleeve loft lives in a different shop. Hosel bores live in a different shop. This bay measures face-behind-neck on irons, then the cousins: hybrids, wedges, and the small lag some drivers still hide in the face.

Kettering, Beavercreek, Fairborn, and the river towns send bags that mix a player 7 with a GI 4. The mill treats each category as its own work order.

  1. Surface plate, not a guess

    The iron sits against a machinist plate. The hosel axis is the datum. Digital jaws read leading-edge lag in millimeters before anyone swings.

  2. Then the damp mat

    We wet the bay mat to mimic a June morning off the river. Offset that looked pretty on a dry rack can still knife when the grass holds water.

  3. Work order, not a slogan

    You leave with a mill sheet: lag per iron, the set curve, and whether a cavity or a blade is lying to your eyes at address.
